Winfield IL. — May 5, 2022 — The Winfield Fire Protection District Board of Trustees voted to seek a referendum to increase the limiting rate on the upcoming June 28, 2022 Primary Election ballot.  This limiting rate referendum requests the funds to hire two additional Paramedic/Firefighters around the clock in order to staff a second ambulance to respond to the growing number of simultaneous ambulance requests the District responds to annually, as well as infrastructure to support the additional staffing.

The Winfield Fire Protection District is seeking an increase of 0.177% to the limiting rate, which would equal an effective tax rate of 0.5325%.  If approved, the new rate would be 0.082% lower than the taxing rate of the next lowest Fire District operating within DuPage County.  The additional tax on a single-family house having a fair market value of $100,000 is estimated to be $59.00 annually.

The Winfield Fire Protection District provides primary EMS and Fire Protection for an area of 13 square miles with more than 30,000 people, and includes the Village of Winfield; as well as areas in unincorporated DuPage County including Wayne, Milton, and Winfield Townships; and unincorporated West Chicago, Winfield, Wheaton, and Carol Stream.

In DuPage County, increases in property tax extensions are limited by state law to the lesser of 5 percent or the increase in the consumer price index for the year preceding the levy year. In 2020 the increase allowed was 1.4%. The limitation for a taxing district can only be increased with voter approval.

Founded in 1929, Winfield Fire Protection District became a taxing body in 1970 and has not received a voter-approved tax rate increase since 1985 when voters approved adding paramedic services.
