Cat/dog hair and dander are things that, in addition to dust and pollens, a good furnace filter helps remove from the air in your home. But these load up that filter more quickly than in a pet-free home. Once a filter gets clogged, it can no longer remove particulate matter from the air, and in fact the restricted air flow can overheat your furnace. From then on, the default filtering is done via your lungs and extra work with your dust cloth. One of the best filters is the 3M Filtrete, but the better the filter the sooner it will load up. How long that takes will depend on your home’s contents, its occupants, the furnace type, your neighborhood and of course the season. As a rule of thumb, if you are unsure of what a “loaded up” filter looks like, change it every three months.
