Come to our General Meeting on Tuesday evening, October 23, to hear answers to questions regarding wells and septic systems.  This month’s meeting will feature professionals speaking on these subjects which are familiar to many residents in the West-Win area.

Below are questions concerning wells and septic systems.  These may prompt you to think of others.  Please bring your questions to the meeting or email them to West-Win@comcast.net.

Wells:

  1. How would I know if my well pressure tank bladder is leaking, and can this damage my well pump?
  2. What kind of testing should be done to make sure my well water is free of bacteria and contaminants including any leakage from the now-closed landfill at Blackwell Forest Preserve? Is there a difference between the county tests and private company tests?
  3. My house had high levels of radon gas. Will there be radium in my well water?
  4. What can I do to protect my well pump from lightning?
  5. Must I chlorinate my well every year? What does this mean?
  6. What is a whole house chlorinating system?
  7. I get the smell of rotten eggs from the toilet areas or when I run cold water. What can I do about that?
  8. Do I need a water softener? What does it accomplish?
  9. If there is iron in my well water (it creates orange color stains) is there anything I can add (other than the usual salt) to counteract the iron?
  10. Do I need to have a filtration system for my well water and water softening equipment?

Septic Systems:

  1. What is a multi-flow system? Are there other types of systems?
  2. Is it OK to have my sprinkler system water the lawn over the septic field?
  3. How does a septic system fail? How will I know it?
  4. When soil is not ideal for onsite septic systems, such as the clay that’s prevalent in this area, what can be done to make a septic system work satisfactorily?  Will such soil cause system failure, and how can that be prevented? What are the alternatives?
  5. Since roots growing into the pipes of the septic field might be a problem, is it safe to flush root killers down the toilet?
  6. Why do I need to pump my septic tank and how often is this required?
  7. Is there a difference in toilet paper – is one better for septic systems?
  8. What are some of the worst things you can put down your drain if you have a septic system?
  9. Are there additives that help the bacteria in a septic tank do its job…are they really required?
  10. What is a perc (percolation) test, how is it done, and why is it needed?
  11. If I notice a hole over my septic tank, why should I not walk close to it?

What does it cost to replace a septic tank?
